Title: Determing if a solution is neutral.
Post by: KurzickMushroom on March 23, 2009, 06:37:07 PM
Hello guys. I've learned to determine strong and weak acids and bases. However, I am somewhat confused on neutral solutions. Strong acids, I look at the acids list. Bases- if it's an ionic compound it's strong, if it's molecular, it's weak. If I was provided with the chemical formula of a chemical, how could I determine if it is neutral?

Thanks in advance.

Most often the neutral salts are products of strong acids and strong bases.   So in the case of sodium chloride it is the salt of Hydrochloric acid and Sodium Hydroxide.   Other than that most neutral molecules are groups that have no acidic (COOH) or basic(NHx) groups
