Title: Does 1-pentyne have a really bad smell?
Post by: toadesque on May 15, 2010, 05:01:39 PM
I did a lab where I had to identify the unknown and I think it's 1-pentyne after doing all the tests but I just want a little extra confirmation. It smelled really horrible so I'm just wondering for anyone out there who has smelled it, was it the same for you?

Smells are rather subjective, but I have used 1-hexyne on the molar scale, and that didn't seem to be that bad, for what it's worth.

yeah i guess so but there's just certain smells that people universally accept as unpleasant, this was one of them. it was like garlic and bad fish mixed together.

anyway my boiling point test, NMR, and IR all confirm it's 1-pentyne now that i've checked so i'm pretty sure of what is.
