Conj Pi Electron Question
« on: February 18, 2025, 08:17:14 PM »
I have a ring with 5 double bonds and one triple bond. The 5 double bonds contribute 10 pi electrons. Triple bonds are suppose to contribute 4 pi electrons but my prof says the total conjugated pi electrons for the system is 12, I would've thought 14 if all the pi electrons are counted. Is it cause only 2 pi electrons from the triple bond are contributing to the conjugated system?

Yes. The other 2 pi orbitals in the triple bond will be in the nodal plane of the conjugated system, so can't overlap with the other pi orbitals in the molecule.
