Title: What Important concept to learn from Organic Chemistry before...?
Post by: zeldajae on June 09, 2011, 09:05:25 PM
Hello,

What are the important concepts from Organic Chemistry needed to know before taking a semester of biochemistry course. I know that alot of AA(ammino acids) are covered, but what major/basic concept is needed from Organic Chemistry before taking a Biochemistry lecture?

Thank you.

I think it is not only organic chemistry what you should know on an basic value. Also the inorganic chemstry like working of buffers, complexing agents, redoxreactions, etc.

This is highly dependent on the course, do you have a syllabus?

I used to teach 1st year Biochemists organic chemistry, but the organic course for 1st year biochem was exactly the same as it was for chem, so we had to cover a lot of stuff. I suppose the core topics will be the most important:

Acids & Bases
Stereochemistry
Carbonyl Chemistry
Nucleophilic substitution
Elimination
Alkene reactivity
