Where can one obtain some nitric acid? I have been looking all around and can't find it anywhere. I asked at the hardware store... they looked at me very suspiciously, like I was some sort of terrorist ;)

That's because it's one of the primary reactants to prepare most high explosives. It's difficult to obtain. There are several threads on this topic on this site. Search this site.

You can get some from the sky. Maybe you can wrest some from wet fields.
