Title: Acid Strength
Post by: Ligte on November 20, 2011, 01:54:50 AM
A simple question, if you have sulfuric acid is it a stronger acid in water, methanol or acetonitrile and why?

Let me ask it diff. I know that the more stable the conjugate base the stronger the acid, so in which solvent would it be

The stability of the conjugate base depends on the amount/extent of solvation that happens. Like dissolves like. Water being a more polar solvent, it should be able to stabilize the conjugate base by solvation in a much better way as compared to the other two.
