What does pM stand for?
« on: July 30, 2006, 07:35:08 PM »
Hi,

I 've been searching for the meaning of pM and it is somehow related to pH (hydrogen potential). I've tried searching on the web but  :-\ unfortunately there seems to be no exact definition (except for "prime minister"). I'd be very greatful if someone could answer this :). Thanks.

p stands for -log, the real question is what M stands for.

In what context have you found it?

pM could stand for pico-molar or 10-12 moles per liter.

Hah, you are right - OP suggestion that it is related to pH made me think in -log categories. But without the context it can't be decided.

One might assume they had a typographical error and meant pH instead of pM.

I have one another idea since the thread started - pM may stand for pMe - like in pNa, pCa and so on. I believe we used such symbol when discussing ion selective electrodes, but it can be that it was me who used such symbol for my own purposes :)

In coordination chemistry ,
pM =  - log ( free metal ion concentration )
