Why is salt bridge is essential in a voltaic/galvanic cell?

Hello everyone,,,
It was given that accumulation of charge hinders the flow of electrons and hence the conversion of chemical energy to electrical energy stops after a while. If we connect an ammeter in series with the circuit we will see that the needle changes for a fraction of a second and then indicates that there is no flow of charges. Why does accumulation of charge in half cells result hinders the flow of current?

Simple physics. What do you know about behavior of charges? How is the potential defined?
