Mechanism troubles!
«

I'm having difficulties coming up with a mechanism for the transformation below. I know the ring is involved somehow but I'm not sure where to start. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I do not recall seeing HCl add into an aromatic ring in the way that you suggested. What about starting the reaction by protonating the carbonyl oxygen?
