Double Check answers regarding polarity and bond types
« on: September 28, 2006, 08:08:01 PM »
Hi guys, I'm hoping you could double check my answers regarding several questions.

1) For each of the following compounds, state whether the bonding is ionic or covalent. (glucose, benzoic acid, p-toluidine, 2-naphthol, sodium chloride

I put (covalent, covalent, covalent, covalent, ionic respectively)

2) Which of the compounds listed in question 1 is/are non-polar

I put p-toluidine and 2-naphthol

3) Which of the compunds in question 1 is/are capable of forming H-bonds with water?

I put glucose, NaCl, and Benzene

4) Write a balanced chemical equation for the reation which could occur between 2-naphthol and NaOH

I couldn't get an answer for this.  Any helping with this question will be greatly appreciated.

thanks for you time, guys!

Hmm... I believe this is a topic more for the general or highschool chemistry forums, but oh well.

Looks good to me

Hmm... Remember that hydrogen bonding involves either a hydrogen bonded to either fluorine, oxygen, or nitrogen or an ionic charge.  Chemicals capable of making hydrogen bonds with water should also be suluble.  One of your answers is wrong, unless I'm mistaken.

That's all I'd really be able to answer with out a little research on p-toluidine and 2-naphthol.  hope I helped  ;D
