Nomenclature of Acids
« on: April 01, 2021, 01:05:13 AM »
Something has been bugging me, and I can't seem to find a good explanation:
Why is it called sulfuric acid and not sulfic acid? (The same with phosphoric acid vs. phosphic acid.) Nomenclature of oxoacids would have HNO3 called nitric acid, so why is it sulfuric acid for H2SO4? Thanks in advance!

Names are historical. There was no special rule for naming.
