Propanoyl vs 1-oxopropyl
« on: March 18, 2022, 03:26:11 PM »
When propanoyl is a substituent in IUPAC nomenclature, would it be equally correct to call it a (1-oxopropyl)? Would this at least be accepted by most chemists reading it as correct? Is there any flexibility by IUPAC in terms of accepting both versions?

Thank you! 1-oxopropyl feels more logical to me.

Most chemist will not understand what it means

I guess propanoyl is more common. But if they can understand 2-oxopropyl, it seems like 1-oxopropyl should be understandable?

Most organic chemists will see "propanoyl" and know exactly what it is - they will have to think for a minute about 1-oxopropyl.
