Step-wise ionization of all three carboxyl groups of citric acid
« on: September 25, 2004, 07:03:59 PM »
Hi, could you please help me with this question? I am supposed to write an equation to represent the step-wise ionization of all three carboxyl groups of citric acid, but I just can't get it to work.  Please *delete me*

       H
    H-C-COOH
  HO-C-COOH
    H-C-COOH
       H
 Hope this helps

Ok, the carboxyl groups, COOH (represented as CO2H  below) have the acidic  H, So,

R(CO2H)3  -> R(CO2H)2(CO2)-  +  H+  1st ionization
 R(CO2H)2(CO2)-  -> R(CO2H)(CO2)22-  +  H+   2nd
 R(CO2H)(CO2)22-  ->   R(CO2)33-  +  H+     3rd

Where I used R to represent the rest of the molecule, ie
R is C3H5O

Look at it again because I fixed a few subscripts I missed . I don't know if you caught it.
