What causes Acetone to change color
« on: August 22, 2022, 10:11:29 PM »
Hi,

What would cause Acetone purity 99.9% to change color from clear to yellow. The Acetone is stored in metal drums and stored indoors.

Thanks

Acetone be stored in HDPE IBC ?

Acetone (UN no. 1090) can be transported in UN approved EX IBCs that meet the requirement of provision IBC02.  It can be stored in the same kind of IBC (not just any IBC that is unsuitable for flammable liquids) as long as precautions are taken to minimise direct sunlight and potential ignition sources.

It is better practice not to store acetone in IBCs.

Interesting....I was once asked this question once upon a time... I believe in their case it was some sort of aldol condensation that was causing a yellowing effect.  With that said, I find that path length can also influence the perceived color change specifically when it comes to IBC container volumes.  I remember my mentor once saying a single molecule can cause a shift in color.  I took it as gospel but ehh who knows. Good luck!
