odorless mineral spirit vs mineral spirit type 1
« on: January 04, 2023, 08:30:51 AM »
Hi.

Can odorless mineral spirit swell rubber as the standard
mineral spirit (type 1) or it hardly can swell rubber since
most of the aromatic and alicyclic compounds, which are
responsible for the odor and for the swelling action inside
the rubber, are removed from the odorless mineral spirit?

Thanks.

Carbonhydrogen compounds will swell rubber everytime. The odor has nothing to do with it.

Hi Hunter.

I am not an expert and what i am going to say is from reading,
correct me,please,if something wrong or not accurate.
I read that the smaller carbonhydrogen compounds like the aromatic
are the ones which penetrates the rubber and caused it to swell.
So,if the factory removes those aromatic compound from the mineral spirit,in order to make it odorless,i assumed that it won't swell the rubber(or swell it less)as the aromatic compound was removed.
Where am i wrong?

The sprit is made of small carbonhydrogen compounds. C 5-8 pentane to octane and its unsatured or aromatic derivates. There are no big ones in. So all will swell rubber. Aromatic or not aromatic.

Note that "aromatic" in the context of hydrocarbons doesn't mean "those that smell", but those with a specific arrangement of atoms. They can smell, they can not.

Okay,i understand, though it is a very complicate subject
with too many types and compounds of mineral spirits.
Thanks for your help. :)
