I don't even know what the central atom of a isoprene is. Does the rule above work when you don't have an odd number of carbons on the longest not necessarily straight backbone?

Isoprene is a trivial name for 2-Methyl-1,3-butadiene, i think it has nothing to do with the Iso like in Iso-propyl. There is no n-prene vise versa isoprene, like in Isopropyl to n-Propyl or n- Butane and Isobutane (2-Methylpropane).

hexaprene, heptaprene exist but butaprene,ethylprene don't exist on google.com

And?
These are also trivial names.
Please check the IUPAC names for them.
There are also others like Neoprene, Chloroprene, Newprene, Hiprene, Terraprene,etc.
