Minoxidil solubility in ethanol
« on: September 26, 2024, 05:30:13 PM »
Hi guys,

I need some help here.
I'm trying to make minoxidil powder soluble in ethanol (rubbing alcohol).
Minoxidil 5% liquid that Upjohn sells is 50mg/per ml soluble, but the best I can get is 1m/per ml solubility.
Do I need to heat up the ethanol on a hot plate to make the minoxidil powder soluble at 50m/ml??
Or is there another way to do it??

Hi Dynamin,

You might like to consider the 3rd sentence of the 'laboratory procedures' section of the following...

https://cdn.caymanchem.com/cdn/insert/15302.pdf

This would suggest a different solvent (most likely propylene glycol) is your best option.

Thanks rjb, but thats the problem. Dissolving minoxidil into PG works but PG makes your hair very sticky.
Thats undesirabe for many people. Most people dont wanna walk around with greasy hair.
Also 20% of the population is allergic to propylene glycol

All true but none of that alters the FACT that minoxidil only has a solubility of ~1mg/ml in ethanol.  You just wanting something different does not make any difference to the solubility.

Minoxidil 5% liquid that Upjohn sells is 50mg/per ml soluble,

The comercial solutions contain as Solvents not only Ethanol, it's mixture of different polyglycols,
PEG 400- 1000, Propylene glycol, water, ethanol, transcutol P, caprylic acid, and Isopropyl alcohol.
