Ideal Gas Problem
« on: January 06, 2010, 03:25:21 PM »
EDIT: I can't get the latex to work. It worked on some of the equations, but not on the others. So I don't know what to do. I use it all the time on the math help forum and the physics forum. It works great, but it doesn't seem to function properly on this forum.

A certain amount of gas at 298.15 K and at a pressure of 0.800 atm is contained in a glass vessel. Suppose that the vessel can withstand a pressure of 2.00 atm. How high can you raise the temperature of the gas without bursting the vessel.

$$PV=nRT/$$

$$\frac{P_1V_1}{nT_1}=\frac{P_2V_2}{(nT_2)} /$$

$$\frac{P_1V_1}{T_1}=\frac{P_2V_2}{T_2} /$$

If I fill this in with the numbers:

$$\frac{(0.800 atm)V_1}{298.15 K}=\frac{(2.00 atm)V_2}{T_2} /$$

$$T_2/$$ should be the maximum temperature, however, I don't know the volumes. How do I find the volumes with the information given?

I'm trying to fix the latex. I can't get it to work. The 'preview' function doesn't seem to work for me, so I don't know what it's going to look like when I submit the post.

Why do you need the volumes? The size of the vessel isn't changing (well, until it explodes that is) so the volume of the gas isn't going to change either.

Yes, I finally noticed that. Thanks for your reply.
