Balancing Long Equations.
« on: November 08, 2006, 08:51:28 PM »
Could some one try balancing this stupidly long equation..

Iron(II)Sulphate + Potassium Manganate(VII) + Sulphuric Acid ----> Iron(II)Sulphate + Potassium Sulphate + Manganese(II)Sukphate + Water

I got

FeSO4 + KMnO4 + H2SO4 ---> Fe2(SO4)3 + K2SO4 + MnSO4 + H2O

Any help much appreciated!

Start by getting the reaction correct, as you have two conflicting equations.

With your nomenclature you have Iron(II)Sulphate on both the reactants and products, but on the equation you have Iron(II)Sulphate on the left (ferrous sulfate) and on the right you have ferric sulphate. Which one is correct and which one are you trying to balance?

Should be Iron(III)Sulphate on the right side of your text equation.
Now it is time to balance this equation. A few methods exist. In the algebraic method assing letter symbols to all reagents, set system of equation based on material balance and solve system in integers (6 equation, 7 variables).
