C&EN: Top Pharmaceuticals
« on: June 21, 2005, 08:53:35 PM »
There's a very interesting series in the latest Chemical & Engineering News that highlights some of the most prominent pharmaceuticals in existence.  Some are common (aspirin), others infamous (thalidomide), but all are important.  I recommend that everyone take a look!  Access should be free for everyone.

I can't believe sodium pentathol didn't make it.  Sure, ether was first, but is it mistakenly known as the Truth Serum?  I think not.

Viagra is listed as a "Vasodilator" - not a "hardener" lol  :P

Thanks for posting the links. Interesting that Vioxx is on the list given that it has been withdraw over safety concerns. I would have thought that Relenza or Tamiflu might have got a mention under anti-virals as well -- they haven't changed the world (yet) I suppose other than give us a defence against an influenza pandemic... like the Spanish flue in 1927 (I think?) that killed 20 million people.

Interesting that at least one of the substances on the list is classified by the US Government as "having no currently accepted medical use".
