functional groups and homologous series
« on: December 08, 2006, 02:58:37 AM »
If an organic compound is consisted of two or more different functional groups, then how can I determine which homologous series does it fall in? For example, if both -OH group and -COOH group are both present, does the compound belongs to alcohol or caboxylic acid?

A pretty tricky question, in my opinion. I think that, since the carboxyl groups have generally higher priority than the hydroxyls, you should consider it an acid.
