Making Smoke for Cub Scouts
« on: December 29, 2006, 11:49:43 AM »
Hi

I am a Cub Master and at our winter camp we have a little ceremony were we test our patrol leaders.  They hold a cup made from a branch of a tree.  We add the spirit of the wolf (ammonia) and the strength of the bear (baking soda) and we tell them if it bubbles they we be a good leader.  This year I would like to have bubbles and smoke.  Is there a safe combination of chemicals I can mix to get this affect?  There does not have to be a lot of smoke.  Just a little wisp would be fine.

Thanks in Advance

Dry ice in water creates a mist effect.

Also swimming pool chlorine with ammonia gives a lot of smoke (mostly NH4Cl). But be careful with this combination. In small quantities (1 gram of solid organic swimming pool chlorine + 3 ml of household ammonia) you will have fun, but please don't use larger quantities. The smoke is mostly NH4Cl, which is non-toxic, but it also may contain some NH2Cl, which has a very nasty smell and is toxic. If you do this smoke-trick with swimming pool chlorine and ammonia, only do it outside!
