Need help with conversions
« on: January 09, 2007, 02:23:35 PM »
 Hello,
      I am having trouble understanding this conversion problem.This is the right way 1,500mL/1 . 0.000L/1mL . 1KL/1,000L the way I did it which is wrong is this 1,500mL/1 . 0.000L/1mL . 1,000kL/1L
What I don't understand is why do I have to write 1,000kL/1L opposed to 1kL/1,000L if they are both equal and liters is able to cancel.Any help would be great ,Thanks!

With conversions all your conversion factors must be equal to 1.

For example, we know that 1000g = 1 kg.  Therefore, if we divide both sides by 1kg, we get 1000g/1kg = 1.  Alternatively, if we divide both sides by 1000g, we get 1kg/1000g =1.  So both of those ratios are valid conversion factors.

So, now can you see why 1000L/1kL is a valid conversion factor and why 1000kL/1L is not a valid conversion factor?
