Sulfuric Acid Succes!
« on: February 10, 2007, 08:32:53 PM »
Yesterday I finally recived all my stuff from united nuclear (finally shhhes) and so I've set up a nice garage lab, I might post pictures later as well. And I have been experimenting from "the book". The chemicals I have now are Manganese Dioxide, and Sulfur. So I tried doing the burning sulfur and then trapping the gas with a beaker and then putting water in it, thing. And then I went and bought some litmus paper and tested the sulfur water and normal distilled water. To my surprise! Acidic! Is this Sulfuric acid? I'm guessing at a very low concentration? If i countined to do the trapping the fumes thing would it eventually become stronger? How can I test the strength of the acid I have right now?

Thanks

Sulfurous, not sulfuric.

To figure out the concentration of your acid you could perform an acid-base titration with a solution of a base (e.g. NaOH) of known concentration.
