What is the mechanism in atomic properties that determine physical properties? Why does increasing the atomic number from 6 to 7 change the physical properties from a black solid to a colorless gas?

Most chemical and physical properties of atoms and molecules depends on their electronic structures. Changing the atomic number changes the number of electrons in the atom, which will change its electron configuration, which will change its chemical and physical properties.

Elements in the same group have similar chemical properties. These tend to be classified. Halogens, chalcogens, alkaline earth metals, alkali metals.
So what does this tell of elements in the same period?
