Oxidation state
« on: February 14, 2007, 01:35:52 PM »
Hi,

I would really appreciate help figuring out the oxidation state of the following:

An acidic solution of potassium dichromate of concentration 0.1 M was added to 10 cm3 of 1.2 M Sn2+ solution.  A total of 40 cm3 of the dichromate solution was needed to complete the reaction and the final color of the solution was green.  What is the oxidation state of tin at the end of the reaction?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Cammi

Hi,

I did not know about this forum rule. I definitely don't want to break any rules. I will try to work it out myself.  Thanks for explaining the rules. I will keep this in mind before posting again.

Calculate moles of charges in Sn2+ and moles of electrons Cr2O72- can draw and think about change of oxidation state of Sn after withdrawing these electrons.
