Repairing cracked borosilicate glass
« on: February 17, 2007, 06:44:06 PM »
Hi,

I have a small crack in my round bottom flask caused by an impact. Currently the crack does not affect the use of flask and it does not leak. However i am worried that the crack will grow in size and cause problems. Could it be repaired by melting the area of glass with a propane torch/bunsen? or would this make the problem worse?

It would just make the problem worse, unless you are experienced in glass making!

Round bottom flasks are used a lot when boiling solutions, and you do not want to boil a solution with a cracked flask; you could easily cause it to “explode” and flick glass around (it is not really a spectacular explosion, but still not the safest thing).

I would just get a new one.

Make it into a sculpture and charge 3 times the price of it.

I hate it when that happens!  I was washing one the other day with a crack so small I didn't notice it, and it fell apart in my hands.  :(
