BONDING AND PROPERTIES HELP !
« on: February 25, 2007, 08:15:29 PM »
i need some help with these problems

1. How do melting points compare for molecular (covalent) and ionic substances? Explain the difference in terms of which type of compound has a stronger bond.

2. Electrical conductivity is a property that can be predicted for ionic and molecular substances. What characteristics must a stubstance have in order to conduct an electrical charge ?
a. In what states of matter do ionic substances conduct electricity?
b. In what states do molecular substances conduct electricty?
c. In what states do metals conduct electricity?

THANKS

Do you have any ideas?  I think if you show that you tried the questions yourself, everyone here would be happy to help :)

OK ill try it out...

I think Ionic bonds have a high melting point that covalent bonds becuase ionic bonds are generally stronger.

A characteristic a substance must have in order to conduct electricity is a melting point and boiling point so particles can heat and release energy.

I have no idea if these are rite or not. please help

When an ionic bond melts, what type of bonds are being broken?  When a covalent compound melts, what type of bonds are being broken?

For question two, you can think of examples to help answer the questions.
Table salt (NaCl) is an ionic compound.  In what state(s) of matter will NaCl conduct electricity?
Table sugar (sucrose) is a molecular compound.  In what state(s) of matter will NaCl conduct electricity?
Iron (Fe) is a metal.  In what state(s) of matter will iron conduct electricity?

Also, please do not post the same topic on multiple boards.  It is against the Forum Rules.
