Have you ever seen a NMR-Spectra of a THP-protected alcohol? Due to diastereoisomers it looks like a mess ;-)
You can't tell the "disadvantage", as for example the mild cleaving conditions might be a disadvantage. In a different molecule this is perhaps just the thing you want to have...
So, no general statement can't be given, as far as I'm concerned.
