Hydrogen Spectrum

Hi all,

    While discussing Hydrogen spectrum we talk about higher orbits while all know that Hydrogen has one electron which resides in first i.e K orbit.Then why & how this electron be excited to higher orbits if higher orbits does'nt exist?Thanks.

Orbital is like a shelf. It is either occupied or not. Just because shelf is empty doesn't meant it doesn't exist, same happens with orbitals. Difference is shelf exists as a real, physical object, while orbital is not - you can't touch it. Orbitals exist in similar sense as natural numbers do.
