what happens between atoms in an alloy????
« on: March 20, 2007, 07:57:16 AM »
dear all,

I have come up to a question in my chemistry assignment which I searched Google for a whole day :o but ended up with nothing :'(. The question is how atoms in an alloy are arranged and what bonding that occurs in an alloy is. It would not be tricky if it was in a salt or non-metal elements; but in this case, it's about alloy, which is a mixture of a metal with another substance!!

Hope to get some replies from the forum's members. Thank you in advance.

there are 3 types of alloys i think u r talking about the substitutions alloys
in this type of alloy the atoms of one metal replace the atoms of the other metal in the Crystal lattic of pure metal this takes place
When the two metals have:-
   1-the same diameter(atomic volume)
   2-the same crystal structure
   3-the same chemical properties.
about th type of bond between the atoms it is metallic bond
note:- this type takes place usually between the metal of the transition elements because it  contains the  previous conditions.
