I need to do a solvent extraction tomorrow on either acid/base or acid/neutral and won't find out which until tomorrow.
My guess is that I should first of all put in something like NaOH to raise the pH of the acid to make it a salt, I can then keep that and lower the pH of the base and extract that (with diethyl ether?). Then add HCl to the acid to lower it's pH and retrieve the acid. The base I could evaporate and do something (?) with whatever I have left. Does that sound right?
What would I do with neutral substance? Which would I work with first, the acid, base or neutral, and which second?
Is there anything I'm missing?
Oh, and I believe that in this extraction diethyl ether would be lighter and so be on top in a separating funnel, so I mix it up and let it settle, then keep the lower layer and get rid of the top layer, correct?
Thanks for any advice:)
