titration of p touluenesulphoric acid (PTSA) --- URGENT PLEASE
« on: September 30, 2010, 07:15:33 PM »
Hi all
I need your urgently help of this please

I have p-touluenesulphoric acid as a solid phase, and need to know what the concentration of it.
As the manufacture it includes 97.5% PTSA and 0.3% sulfuric acid.

I know the PKa that -2.8 (from Wikipedia) but I need to calculate the PH that should be the end point in order inserts it to the titration machine. How can I calculate it??

The second point that I need to know also the concentration of the sulfuric acid that's should be around 0.3%.  and the PKa is -3 (from Wikipedia) How can I calculate it??

After knowing the PH end point should I get two curves??
This titration at aqueous medium with NaoH, should that be accurate ??

Thanks

You will be not able to determine both acids separately from the titration, only their sum, and you will get one titration curve.

These are both strong acids. See http://www.titrations.info/acid-base-titration-equivalence-point-calculation

Note that you would get much better accuracy determining amount of impurities and assuming acids are reast of the mixture.

But I am also will not be able to titrate it at aqueous medium because it will not be accurate, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acid_dissociation_constant. And I haven't non-aqueous electrode in order to titrate it at solvent medium.
I need to determine the both acids.

I know that I can determine it at HPLC, but unfortunately I haven't.
There is also method at spectrophotometer... If you know it pleases!!!

Thanks
