Conjugate acid and base.
« on: July 16, 2007, 05:58:38 PM »
I do know that a strong conjuagate acid will yield a weak conjugate base and vice versa ; and a strong conjugate base will yield a weak conjugate acid.

My question is:

What is the conjugate base of H3PO4- and what is the conjugate acid of H3PO4??

I tried to look at he equation and answer the question but am not sure if i got it right:

In H2PO4-+H2O   -----> H3O + HPO4-2, therefore the conjugate base is HPO4 -2

and

In HPO4-2 +H2O -------> OH- +H2PO4 -2; therefore the conjugate acid is H2PO4 -2

Am I correct? If not, what is the correct answer?

Recheck your post, pay special attention to indices. You may be right, it is just hard to tell looking at your post.
