My own lab is making Nitrous Oxide. I understand the whole process except for the collection of it. It said to displacement of air. I just don't get that. Help me please.

It is depends on the density of the products.
If the density of the product is 'heavy' than air, then the collection method should be downward displacement of air.
If lighter than air, then upward displacement of air.
