Biomolecules: Some Basics
« on: August 26, 2007, 03:30:16 PM »
Hi everyone,

My class has an assignment ad we have yet to receive our textbooks as yet :( .  I tried to look oline and use my previous knowledge of chemistry (which is fairly limited), and I am stuck on our pre-class assignment.

It is very simple, but I have o clue what the teacher is looking for in these questions, as I am no chemistry brain.
It gives us the molecular, structural, ball and stick, and Space filling model of glucose and asks us what you can learn from each one, and what all 4 have in common.
My guess was that Molecular formulas tell you exactly how many of each of the 3 atoms glucose has, and the structural formula shows us that there are no double bonds in the molecule, making it easy to break down.  As for the bal and stick and Space filing model...I have no idea  ??? .

The next question is about glucose, sucrose, and fructose and their similarities.  It asks us to just list 5 similarities between the 3.  Al I got was that 1) Glucose and Fructose are isomers, 2) They are all organic consisting of C, H, and O, 3) they all contain similar proportions of C H and O (1:2:1)

I would greaty appreciate any help, as I am a bit confused until my textbook comes in.  Thanks!

Since your textbook as yet to arrive, which is odd.
Try this site:
http://www.chemguide.co.uk/

It is essentially a high school AP chemistry text book on the web.

IMHO you are on the right track in general, look at 3D properties - but don't expect anything extra.

As for glucose, sucrose, and fructose - see how glucose and fructose differ, then compare them to parts of sucrose.

Edit: Please take care when posting, I have edited all posts to change typo in the subject.

Thanks, I was able yo list 5 things, however not al  were similarities.

Ill check out the site that you suggested, I have to do the same thing (5 similarities for 3 different molecules) for other molecules also, so Ill gie them a try with the help you gave me with the glucose.

And sorry about the spelling, my spell check doesn't check spelling in titles :(.

My textbook is on backorder, hopefully it will get here soon.

Thanks again!

Well, I still dont quite know what they are looking for, but thanks for all the help.  This isnt suposed to be graded tomorrow, so I should be OK, hopefully the prof. will go over it.

Thanks, and if I have any other questions, they may be coming your way ;)
