This is possibly quite a basic question for a lot of you on here but I am having trouble getting my head around where the name 2,2-dimethylpropane is coming from given the structure of the molecule.
I can see where the 2,2 is coming from - this is because the methyls are coming from the 2nd carbon atom in the chain vertically and the 2nd in the chain horizontally. But I am stuck as to why it is
dimethyl.. rather than just methyl. Does the "di" just indicate that there is more than one methyl present?
Thanks for your help and nice to meet you all, first post.
Apologies if this is a simple question.
Klas.
