Naming compounds
« on: October 05, 2007, 06:20:35 PM »
Can someone give me the names for these compounds? I looked them up on google and couldn't find their full name.

NaCr2O7

Bi(No3)3

You have to know that Cr2O7 is a polyatomic ion called dichromate.

NO3 is also a polyatomic ion with a name of Nitrate.

Knowing this, can you now name the compounds yourself?

NaCr2O7- Sodium Dichromate

Bi(No3)3- Bismuth Nitrate

not really sure what to do with the 3 after (No3) Bismuth Trinitrate? Tribismuth Nitrate?

thanks, i appreciate it

Your name for Bi one is correct. The other one is incorrect, unless you mistyped the first formula?

The three after the Nitrate is to balance the charges to make them zero...  Nitrate carries a -1 charge and Bi being +3 you need to make them equal zero.

Which is why there is 3 nitrates.
But he is naming the compounds, not making the formula.

As I said, you were right, Bismuth Nitrate is the correct name. No clue about the other as the NaCr2O7 is not possible as written, so you must clarify my earlier question as to if you typed it wrong or that is what you were actually given.

How I understood his question was what the 3 after (NO3) was for.  My apologies if that is not what he meant, and it would not affect the name either way.
