Confused on Binary Molecules
« on: October 08, 2007, 06:29:20 PM »
Hey guys back again

I'm SO confused today with Binary Molecular Compounds...

In my book (Chem: The Central Science) the heading says "Names and Formulas of Binary Molecular Compounds" and an example is Cl2O and it's name is dichlorine monoxide, another example is P4S10 being called tetraphosphorus decasulfide...

On a worksheet labled Binary Ionic Compounds, barium fluoride is labeled BaF2 and Na3N is labeled Sodium Nitride!

But I thought all binaries are named using the prefixes...Whats going on? Is there some rules I'm ignoring?
 ???
Thanks alot
Derg

Only covalent compounds are named using the prefixes.  You should not include the prefixes when naming ionic compounds.
