Alkene mechanism
« on: October 10, 2007, 05:49:52 PM »
We just started learning about alkenes and the various mechanisms....i am completely clueless as to how one is supposed to determined when given a molecule and the solvent and figure out the products and the structure/stereochemistry of the molecule....

the mechanisms we have learned about so far are:
dehydrohalogenation
dehydration
addition of halogens
addition of hypohalous acids
addition of water to alkenes (hydration and oxymercuration)
Hydroboration
carbenes
Simmons-Smith reaction
Reduction of alkenes (hydrogenation)

i am COMPLETELY LOST. please enlighten me.
