Junior in Highschool (AP chem) needing help for science fair.
« on: November 01, 2007, 04:20:39 PM »
Im a junior in high school, taking my second year of chemistry. I need something to do for a science fair project and can not think of anything.I have looked at various websites and they all have unappealing experiments and projects that I could do in a matter of 5 min. Thing is, I want something that is actually going to challenge me, something that is going to actually take something and research. I have access to any piece of equipment or instruments in a Lab that my father oversees. I do not want anything that is cliche.

I would really appreciate nudges in the right direction, or perhaps a few topics... so if anyone could help me out.

Thanks,
Donal.

A real science project takes time, how much do you have? What are some things that you find interesting in Chemistry?
Most Common Suggestions I Make on the Forums.
1. Start by writing a balanced chemical equation.
2. Don't confuse thermodynamic stability with chemical reactivity.
3. Forum Supports LaTex

I have around 30 days.

Im interested in in something that may be applicable in the industrial chemistry scope. Possibly materials or energy.

I just dont know anything that I could experiment with...

How about something in corrosion.  In HS I once did an experiment on cathodic protection which was very interesting.

Thanks Sev, anything else? I really want to do something that would apply to industry, idk.

It does apply to industry.  In principal it can be used on any metallic surface in contact with an electrolyte, eg. offshore pipelines in the Baltic sea.  But otherwise, listen to Mitch.

Water purification by the use of cation and anion resin. You can use the conductivity meter to measure great different of conductivity  before and after treatment water sample and to show the mechanism of the resin.

Thanks.

I just do not know how I would go about approaching the subjects proposed. I was referred on another forum to consider the activity series, possibly ordering the reactivity myself. Idk, Im never good with putting projects together
