Topic: Hydrogen Atom Question  (Read 8884 times)

Hydrogen Atom Question

 :o How many hydrogen atoms are in 1.78 pg of this compound ( C16H17O8)?

molar mass: 337.296g

Here's what I've done so far:

(1.78pg * 1g/10^12pg) * (1mol / 337.3g) = 5.2772013E-15 mol C16H17O8

5.2772013E-15 mol C16H17O8* 6.022E23 = 185405110.5 atoms


But that seems like waayyyyy too many hydrogen atoms - is there anywhere that I went wrong?

You found you have 185405110.5 molecules of C16H17O8.

How many atoms of Hydrogen is in 185405110.5 molecules of C16H17O8?

actually i redid the calculation and found that the answer is 3177817569

so to find the # of hydrogens in the compound - would i just divide by 17?

total mass of H atoms = percentage mass of H x mass of sample

number of hydrogen atoms = total mass of H atoms / mass of each H atom

Ignore Geodome for now, because you took a different route to the answer.

If you had 1 million bicycles and I asked you how many tires you had, would you divide 1 million by 2?

Hhould be molecules of C16H17O8.
Each Molecule contains 17 hydrogen atoms ... and finally round result to 3 significant digits
(5.40E10)
