In lab, we are trying to figure out an unknown compound when given IR, H NMR, mass spectra, and several tests. From some of the tests, I've concluded that it has an aromatic hydrocarbon functional group. According to our literature, there are three compounds with close to the same melting point (93 degrees C)--triphenylmethane, 2,7-Dimethylnaphthalene, and Retene. Now I'm stuck. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.
