Nomenclature i think?
« on: December 06, 2007, 07:52:52 PM »
Anyone have any easy tips to do this, i think its nomenclature but not sure, here are some examples:

Write the name for the compounds using the stock system

CaCO3  = Calcium carbonate
CuSO4 = copper(II)sulfite

hopefully i posted the right ones with the right answers, but does anyone have any easy ways of doing these, like Ba(OH)2 or HClO3? any tips on doing these?

SO42- is sulfate, SO32- sulfite - so CuSO4 is copper(II) sulfate (cupric sulfate).

Work out ox. number/charge of cation by looking at the charge on the counterion.  eg. Ba(OH)2: OH is 1-, so Ba must be 2+.

so would NaOH be  sodium hydroxide since Na is +1 amd OH is -1 so they would equal eachother?

but im confused on like Ca3(PO4)2  i dunno how to do that like i know there is 3CA 2P and 8O but i dunno how to write it.

Yep, NaOH is sodium hydroxide.  Ca3(PO4)2 is just calcium phosphate.

I'm not sure if I understand your question.

Mg(OH)2 means you have 2 OH- per Mg2+.  You write Mg(OH)2 (with parenthesis), as MgOH2 implies 1 O atom, which is wrong.

Mg(OH)2 is Magnesium hydroxide (no need to write 'Magnesium dihydroxide')

edit: you should know that PO43- is a polyatomic ion called phosphate.

1c2h3e4m are you confused by how sometimes you write the oxidation state in () and other times you don't?  For the alkali and alkali earth ionic compounds you never need to state it.  (because the OS of these elements doesn't change unless it is the metal itself)  The OS should be apparent by the ligand contribution.  For example NaOH and Ca(OH)2.  Na is +1 and Ca+2 always and the others are similar.  But for transition metals like Cu you have to specify the oxidation state.  Like CuSO4 is copper (II) sulfate and CuI is Cu (I) iodide or CuO copper (II) oxide.  Or FeO is iron (II) oxide or FeSO4 iron (II) sulfate or FeCl3 iron (III) chloride.

ok im gonna try to answer some of mine and could you say if there right?

AlCl3 = aluminom chloride because Al is 3+ and Cl is 1- but there is 3 is its 3-??

Fe2(CrO4)3 = (guessing) Iron(II) Chromate??? is wrong plz explain how

Zn(C2H3O2)2  =  dont even want to atempt, how lol?

K2SO4 = potasium sulfate??? kind a guess again....

this is my last question porbably lol, sry for all the questions

Aluminium (III) chloride, Iron (III) chromate, Zinc acetate (C2H3O2 is same as CH3COO), correct: Potassium sulfate.  :)
