magnesium ribbon reaction
« on: December 03, 2007, 08:43:22 PM »
ok, i just did a calorimetry lab with Mg and HCl. but because MgO forms on the surface of the ribbon, how would the enthalpy of the reaction change if you didn't clean the surface? would the temperature increase?

The enthalpy of reaction would be the same but you would determine it incorrectly experimentally.  You clean the surface free of any oxidation (MgO) in order to minimize error when determining values for the Mg reaction.
