Ethanol and NaCl
« on: November 27, 2007, 09:57:54 AM »
I'm trying to extract something from a powder that is mixed with 90% NaCl... I'm using Ethanol since the other substance is soluble in it and if I had 100% Ethanol this would be no problem but all i can get is 95% Ethanol and some of the NaCl is getting dissolved in the Ethanol because it has some water in it..

What can i do to remove the NaCl from the Ethanol?

I think proportion of NaCl in sample depends on volume of ethanol you have used. But anyway, recrystallization process maybe remove NaCl and impurity. Ethanol or methanol as solvent will be the best.
Sorry for my english, thanks.

Solubility of NaCl in pure ethanol is very small. But you use 95 % ethanol with water. Though solubility of NaCl in methanol is a bit more it is better to use them since it is anhydrous.

Or you could dry your ethanol with 3a molecular sieves.  Some have reported obtaining absolute ethanol with this process, however, it is more realistic to expect about 0.5% water in the end product.  The longer you let it sit the less water you will have in your EtOH.
