Identifying Chemical Compounds
« on: December 06, 2007, 09:03:07 PM »
I have a lab practical were I have to identify 3 unknown chemical compounds.  They are under the groups Potassium Salts, Halogens, Acids, Calcium Salts, Carbonates, Hydrocarbons, and Alcohols.  I have to perform tests to narrow down the choices for which categories it is in.  I have a vary of chemicals to perform test with and also conductivity probes and PH paper.  Can someone help me!  I don't know how to narrow any of them down accept that I can split them in half if they are liquid or not.  Thanks!!!

That is a pretty good first step.  Some alcohols (phenol) and hydrocarbons(paraffin wax) may be solids however.  See what else you can think of for each type.  Potassium salts and Calcium salts, for example, how are they different?
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.
