Need electrolysis *delete me*!!
« on: January 10, 2008, 07:20:25 PM »
Hi, I recently conducted an experiment for my high school science fair project, and this involved electrolyzing water. We added table salt to the mixture to speed up the process, and ended up creating a bluish foam on the top of the water. I do not know what this was and if it was toxic/carcinogenic or hazordous to my health. I was breathing in any fumes that may have been caused for a good 30 minutes, and was touching it with my hands, and I would like to know if I should be concerened. It has been about 3 days and I am still alive, but it would be greatly appreciated if i could get an answer on this. Thanks.

Dear Meesh;

Don’t fear for your health!   There is nothing very dangerous with this foam.

Table Salt is a bad Electrolyte for the Electrolysis of Water, because you generated Chlorine instead of Oxygen, and that was directly reacting to “Sodium Hypochlorite”.
You may read about that on:   :"Sodium Hypochlorite

For the Electrolysis of Water and for better Electrolytes read:  "Electrolysis of Water

Good Luck!
