Basicity of nitrogen in organic compunds.

Amines act as a base, whereas amides don't; and I understand why.  However, do cyanides act as bases, and if so, can anyone give an example of a reaction?

Welcome to the forum  :)

The treatment of nitriles with acid yields a carboxylic acid (hydrolysis) and a salt. The first step is a protonation of the N-atom. Try to figure out the mechanism...
