Bismuth Trisulfide Synthesis?
« on: June 03, 2008, 04:01:55 AM »
I'm currently involved in the development of low/no toxicity munitions, since it's become unfashinable to poison the good guys. One of the pyro fuels we would like to work with is Bi2S3. This is mostly as a replacement for Sb2S3.

I've been going through a living hell trying to find a reasonably priced source of Bismuth Trisulfide. An extensive search has turned up three possibilities. I can pay way too much for an ultrapure, barely visible quantity from one of the repackers (Alfa Aesar, Spectrum etc), have 20 kilos made at a cost of about 1,500 bucks a kilo, or make my own. I'm leaning toward the latter.

A gentleman at the custom formulator said I could probably make it in a teacup in my own oven. Just do it like they make Sb2S3: Intimately mix a stoichiometric amount of Bismuth powder and Sulfur, and heat just above the melting point of the Sulfur for a few hours.

Is this fasable? And would I gain anything by doing it in an inerted autoclave? I'm at my wits end.

What is the purity level & regular volume you are looking for.
Or
Do you need only small quantity for your research work.

This will decide the best solution possible.
